Five Sentences

In this week's Random Dialogue update, I invite you to contribute 5 sentences.

If you read this after it's been published, and would like to share your five, please send them over to [email protected] and I'll add them to the "live" version. In the meantime.

Find the contradiction to find the solution

Hard problems are often hard to solve because, at their heart, they contain a contradiction.

A contradiction in either what we want [we want Aand also the opposite of A].

Or a contradiction in the solution we come up with [we want X, so we do Y,but it makes something else worse].

If we see the contradiction (often we don't, until we try things...or talk to others and get those frustrating "yes, but" comments)...and can describe our problem/contradiction in conceptual terms, we can then look for successful solutions other people have found to similar problems/contradictions and apply/adapt those.

Humans are natural problem-solvers, so if you know where to look there are catalogs of high-level conceptual solutions to many challenging problems in many domains, together with a helpful cross-reference from the contradictions that cause our frustration to guide us to a solution.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Day-to-day decisions have become mundane to the extent that we don't really think about them for more than a few seconds, like when wandering round a supermarket and deciding between different kinds of pasta or which cereal to buy.

In current times however, decisions have, for many, become far more critical. Decisions are being made now in situations where no decisions had to be made before - like whether or not to spend money on petrol for a journey... (long journeys have been severely curtailed as the cost of living crisis has bitten deeper).

Imagine, for a moment, what it must be like for those who are having to make decisions between heating or eating. It's hard to imagine what it must be like to make those decisions isn't it; especially while you're currently trying to decide which holiday in the sun to go for.

Phil

Only Hugh

I told my kids about you and Hugh and the chip shop.

That you changed the word you to Hugh on all the songs that came on the radio.

I explained the nuanced amusement as random songs played and that some songs must work much better than others.

I wanted them to know the joy that can be found in the seemingly mundane.

And they said “oh my god, dad, you’ve told us this like three time before”.

Best Natural Treatment for Dry Skin

Just watched a video about the best treatment for dry skin, and surprise, surprise, it's good ole olive oil. If you mix it with grated lemon zest and medicinal honey, you'll have the very best anti-wrinkle nighttime face treatment, completely without nasties.

Also, wash your face and apply above an hour before bed to ensure it sinks into your skin and not your pillow (apparently, this applies to any nighttime face potions).

Apply pure extra virgin olive oil to your skin in the morning. It sinks in really fast and protects your skin against the harmful effects of the sun (without any nasties).
