Look What We Have Here

from the "Guildford Swift Project"

Last Sunday, Sarah “Swift” Davis discovered that her resident Swifts had laid their first egg - 9 days after the 2nd Swift arrived.

On the Facebook page, she wrote:

Swifts do not waste time raising their young. It’s one of the advantages of being nest faithful, they do not have to busy themselves building a nest from scratch, they just gradually add to it each year.

It’s important to them to put more energy into raising their young, as they are only here for a short time across the UK’s summer.

In the picture below (don't worry that the egg is not being incubated) it’s normal for Swifts to leave the egg for a while and go and get food for themselves.

Sometimes if insect supply is low, they may have to travel further away to get enough food and will think nothing of flying over to France or up North to get the supply they need.

This means the egg can be left for more extended periods, but this is not a problem as the Swift embryo has a survival trick, where it simply slows down or even stops its development while the parents are away, and then as soon as they return to the egg, it will start maturing again.

Clever Swift.

This week, I cycled to a wonderful event called 'One Good Eco Thing' curated by Shalford Eco Forum at St Mary's Church. I helped out at the Guildford Environmental Forum stand, caught up with Sarah Swift, and enjoyed Christian's talk about ‘Community’ at Tillingbourne.Earth, you may like to engage with the T.E community forum HERE, and/or check it out for ideas to encourage your community to share their projects and support each other.

Effectuation rocks!

Love Saras Sarasvathy's 5 simple principles she uncovered on how expert entrepreneurs act and think.

They don't try to predict the future but instead, create it.

They start with what they have, even if it's just their identity, their knowledge, or the connections they build....and they never risk more than they can afford to loose.

They're always doing, learning, connecting...to build up their resources to get things done and their network of collaborators, supporters, suppliers, customers, etc...figuring things out as they go.

More on her website https://effectuation.org, including her TEDx talk at the bottom (reminds me of Rama and her 100-day sprints, and doing what's doable).

📰Good News Friday

A space to share GOOD news.

For example,

It's all gone bonkers at the community garden! blue speedwell and Forget-me-Nots, yellow buttercups and sprouting broccoli and the hawthorn is just the best ever this year. Come and see the flowers and sit a while...

I look forward to hearing yours.

Until next Friday at 6:08 am (ish).
