Slow Living, What Does It Mean To You?
Random Dialogues 15.3.24, 6:08 am (ish)
Back in November, I attended a career fair at my daughter’s sixth form called “Careers To Save The Planet” and wrote about it here.
A random dialogue with Ross from the Surrey Wildlife Trust during the event, led to a great morning last Saturday, as we planted a wild seedbed at the school where I teach. Around 20 parents and children joined us for the activity. Then, on Monday, I stopped by during playtime to distribute seeds to everyone else, encouraging them to throw them into the seedbed and make a wish.
Let's see what happens! 🌠

we put the turf by the wall as the bare soil will be a wonderful space for solitary insects to head to once they’ve visited the wildflower area
Ross also attended one of our 'drop-in and meet your local councillor' sessions, where I introduced him to George Potter, who serves as the lead councillor for environment and climate change at GBC. I'm hopeful that together they'll work some magic; our vision is to create wildflower circles with the trust and volunteers around Burpham. Currently, they're working on obtaining blessings from the county and borough councils for this project to take place on their land.
We highlighted these efforts in our March and April bi-monthly updates in our local neighbourhood magazine. As a result, the church has reached out to Ross to discuss rewilding parts of the churchyard.
Regarding the picture in the article, my husband humorously remarked that we look like an odd rock band. What's your take on it?⬇️

It implies mindful living.
It’s about paying attention to the present.
It is active meditation.
It is so much a part of you essentially, that you are capable of practising it daily.
Slow living: there is a lot of difference between being still and doing nothing.
These days dynamism is appreciated, and being slow is almost looked down on, often confusing it with a lack of activity or relaxation.
I think it’s a misunderstanding to think stillness is a lack of activity or relaxation, and that dynamism is often overrated.
While it does have its own advantages, how can anything be truly dynamic, without being centred first, without being still first?
For the arrow to hit the aim, by focusing on the supreme and controlling your senses, then perform the action, surely.
Metaphorically, then, for the arrow to hit the aim, it has to be pulled backwards whilst holding the bow still.
In the same way, the mind must be pulled back into a space of meditation, space away from existence, away from worldly activities, from a space ….
and a place of stillness and non-attachment.
So it seems in this day and age, slow living is not just a lifestyle. It is also a skill, and an Art: to live by and thrive!
It’s about what we finally truly believe in. It is not a part of the rat race.

We have a box of photos cluttering up the end of our bed, so Paul is digitally scanning them. He found this photo of my friend “Nick The Teacher” and me from 2003 shortly before we joined in with the “Stop The War in Iraq” protest in London.
