Unveiling Workplace Realities: Do You Apply for Opportunities with 60% or 100% Qualifications? Let's Discuss

Random Dialogues 17.11.23 6:08 am

Ever heard the saying that "men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100%"?

Nor had I until I went along to a wonderful careers evening at my daughter’s school focused on “Careers To Save The Planet (as part of my continuing explorations of Squiggly/Portfolio Careers and to support the organisers who I’m collaborating with on another project).

In particular, I enjoyed the fascinating and inspirational talk by Helen Sherman: “From Marine Biologist to AI Marketing - Science is 75% Storytelling”.

We chatted after and Helen shared how she had first heard about the percentages above at a careers fair and how it had positively impacted her own.

Here’s what I’ve found out with the help of AI:

The origins of this claim trace back to a 2003 internal Hewlett Packard report and have been widely circulated, finding a place in reputable publications like the Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Sheryl Sandberg also touches on a similar concept in her book "Lean In."

Research suggests that individual choices in pursuing opportunities are influenced by various factors, and experiences can differ widely.

Understanding the complexities of gender dynamics in the workplace is crucial.

⚡️“Mushrooms as Medicine” How to Grow Younger Series Part 4 by Yvette Masure | Health is Wealth 🌱

Autumn is still seen, in the slow-changing colours in the woodlands and hedgerows. Beautiful. Soon to be a silhouetted landscape, also with its charm, for me. The ID of naked trees is another perspective.

The forest floor is now layered by the windswept leaves creating a mulch and nutritious blanket for the matrix of life below: The kingdom of fungi - see website ..to their (short ) Industrial waste vídeo» HERE

Mushrooms are THE cleaners and builders of our Earth. They are the ultimate alchemists.

Even industrial waste can be transformed into new materials. Really.

Mycro-mediation neutralises and degrades waste from landfill, oil spills, and urban centres.

The metabolites and enzymes in the mycelium breaks down construction waste… and fast! In days!

So. We now can harness the value of waste!

Using the material made from nature recyclers, the opportunities of mycelium is enormous for a cleaner and more efficient circular bioeconomy.

🔚And Finally

My father taught my sister and me how to play backgammon, we used to really enjoy it together. Since he died 4 years ago, I hadn’t played it, so it was great to have the opportunity to catch up with Guildford Buzz attendee and backgammon enthusiast Phil Kirkwood to play a game, share serendipitous stories, and sip purple tea (#thinkpurplefeelgood).

🎣And a Bit More Finally

Two weeks ago today 22 of us gathered at The Castle Pub - Farnham for a themed speaker dinner featuring Rupert Thompson, who shared the story of Hogs Back Brewery Ltd and the launch of One Planet, a 'hazy 5.5% IPA gem', believed to be the UK's first beer sustainably produced by solar power.

Well, Random Dialoguist speaker Niall Jones who put this fantastic event happen, has written all about it here and shared a video.

Until next Friday at 6:08 am (ish).

Thanks as always for your contributions.
